What Is a Smart Countertop

Stone, With Power Built In

At Impact Countertops, we combine the beauty of premium stone with modern technology. Smart countertops bring convenient power directly to the surface — no visible cords, no bulky covers, no clutter. We fabricate and install three technologies under one umbrella: FreePower wireless charging, Prado flush-mounted outlets, and Docking Drawer pop-up outlets — each engineered into the slab itself. Our shop uses Slabsmith digital templating and a Park Industries CNC to mill the cavities — millimeter-precise fit, no shims, no fillers, no visible seams.

Whether you are a homeowner, designer, or builder in Columbus, we install these integrated features with the same precision we bring to every luxury countertop project.

All Premium Stones

Outlets work with any material. FreePower depends on stone — see compatibility table below.

Charge Through Your Countertop

FreePower technology installs beneath the stone, delivering fast, cord-free charging while preserving the clean, uninterrupted look of your kitchen island or vanity. As a certified FreePower fabricator in Columbus, Impact Countertops engineers each install for flawless integration.

The FreePower charger projects a soft halo of light through the stone, naturally indicating where to place a device. Devices set on the charging zone charge at the same speed as a standard wireless charging pad.

The edge-light test. Before final placement, we hold a flashlight to the edge of your slab and check whether light passes through the side of the stone. Light traveling through the edge tells us whether the FreePower halo will be visible from the top. If the edge stays dark (porcelain, dark granite, dense stones), the charger still works but the halo glow will not show through. We always confirm before fabricating.

Flush Power Outlets

Outlets That Disappear Into Stone

Prado flush-mounted outlets disappear into your stone or tile backsplash, eliminating the need for visible covers. These architectural-grade outlets provide convenient power while maintaining the elegant, uninterrupted lines of a high-end kitchen.

Prado works with every material we fabricate — quartz, granite, marble, quartzite, soapstone, porcelain, and even ceramic tile. Each outlet is UL-listed and installed by a licensed electrician in coordination with the countertop install.

Pop-Up Outlets

Hidden Power, On Demand

When you need power, they rise with a simple press. When you do not, they sit flush and nearly invisible. Perfect for kitchen islands, bars, home offices, and multi-use spaces, our Docking Drawer pop-up outlets keep surfaces clean and uncluttered. Our shop uses Slabsmith digital templating and a Park Industries CNC to mill the cavities — millimeter-precise fit, no shims, no fillers, no visible seams.

Like flush Prado outlets, pop-up units work with any countertop material and are installed by a licensed electrician in coordination with the countertop fabrication.

Material Compatibility

Which Smart Features Work With Which Materials

Power outlets work with every material. Wireless charging requires special consideration — the LED indicator light depends on whether light passes through the stone. We test every slab before fabrication. Our shop uses Slabsmith digital templating and a Park Industries CNC to mill the cavities — millimeter-precise fit, no shims, no fillers, no visible seams.

Material Prado Flush Outlets Pop-Up Outlets FreePower Charging FreePower Light Indicator
Quartz (light/medium)✓✓✓✓ Test slab
Quartz (dark)✓✓✓✗ Light blocked
Quartzite✓✓✓✓ Best results on light slabs
Marble (light)✓✓✓✓ Excellent
Granite (light)✓✓✓✓ Test slab
Granite (dark/black)✓✓✓✗ Light blocked
Soapstone✓✓✓✗ Too dark for light
Porcelain✓✓⚠ Limited✗ Light blocked
Ceramic Tile✓ Prado-specific install———

Bottom line: outlets work with anything we fabricate. For FreePower, the charging always works — the LED indicator depends on the slab. We test before we cut. Our shop uses Slabsmith digital templating and a Park Industries CNC to mill the cavities — millimeter-precise fit, no shims, no fillers, no visible seams.

Impact Countertops certified FreePower wireless charger fabricator Columbus Ohio
Why Impact

Your Local Source for FreePower Wireless Charging

Impact Countertops is a certified FreePower fabricator — one of a handful of luxury stone shops in Central Ohio trained to install wireless charging directly into countertops. We also partner with Prado for flush outlets and Docking Drawer for pop-up power. As a boutique fabricator, every smart-countertop install is hand-finished and vein-matched to the slab layout before cutting.

Smart countertops are easy to specify poorly. The flashlight test, electrician coordination, slab-position planning, and finished-edge integration are where most fabricators stumble. We do this work in-house at our Columbus shop — designers and builders across Upper Arlington, Dublin, Powell, New Albany, Bexley, and Worthington bring us their luxury smart countertop projects for that reason.

Frequently Asked

Smart Countertops FAQ

What is a smart countertop?

A countertop fabricated with built-in technology — wireless charging, flush outlets, or pop-up power — integrated beneath or within the stone so the surface stays uninterrupted.

Can wireless charging work through any stone?

FreePower works through most natural and engineered stones up to about three-quarters of an inch thick. The charging current passes through. The halo indicator light, however, only passes through stones that transmit light — dark granite, soapstone, porcelain, and some dense quartzes block it. The unit still charges devices, but the halo glow will not be visible. We always confirm with an edge-light test on your specific slab: a flashlight held to the edge tells us whether light will travel through the stone.

Can I add smart features to my existing countertops?

Sometimes. Pop-up outlets and Prado flush outlets can occasionally be retrofitted, but the install requires removing and re-cutting sections of the slab and coordinating with an electrician. FreePower wireless charging typically requires the slab to be off — practical only during a remodel or replacement. The cleanest path for retrofit is during your next countertop replacement. Our shop uses Slabsmith digital templating and a Park Industries CNC to mill the cavities — millimeter-precise fit, no shims, no fillers, no visible seams.

How reliable are smart countertop technologies long-term?

Prado outlets and Docking Drawer pop-ups are UL-listed electrical components — they perform like any quality outlet over decades. FreePower wireless chargers are sealed units with no moving parts and carry manufacturer warranties. The countertop installation itself is permanent, but the technology units underneath can be accessed and replaced if a unit ever fails.

How much do smart countertops add to a project?

Pricing varies by technology, slab material, and quantity. A typical FreePower install adds $700 to $1,000 per charging zone — final price depends on the stone (light-translucent slabs are more straightforward, dense or dark slabs may require more planning). Prado flush outlets are $125 per outlet and cutout plus standard electrical work. Docking Drawer pop-up outlets add $500 to $900 per unit. Request a quote for an accurate figure on your specific project. Our shop uses Slabsmith digital templating and a Park Industries CNC to mill the cavities — millimeter-precise fit, no shims, no fillers, no visible seams.

Do flush outlets meet building code?

Yes. Prado outlets are UL listed and installed by a licensed electrician in coordination with the countertop install — they meet all standard code requirements.

Where is the FreePower charging spot marked on the counter?

The FreePower charger projects a soft halo of light through the stone — this halo itself is the marker for the charging zone. You see the glow from above when the unit is active. The exact location is planned during design based on your countertop layout, where devices typically rest, and where the halo will be most visible on your specific slab.

Does Impact Countertops install smart features outside Columbus?

Yes — Upper Arlington, Dublin, Powell, New Albany, Bexley, Worthington, and the greater Central Ohio luxury home market.
