What Is Granite

A 100-Million-Year-Old Premium Surface

Granite countertops are slabs of igneous rock cut from quarries around the world, polished, and fabricated into kitchen and bath surfaces. The stone formed when molten magma cooled slowly deep in the earth, allowing large crystals of feldspar, quartz, mica, and amphibole to grow and interlock — the dense, speckled, crystalline appearance you see on every slab.

Granite is one of the most durable countertop materials available: heat-resistant, scratch-resistant, and with proper sealing, stain-resistant. Each slab is geologically unique — no two granite countertops are identical. Impact Countertops fabricates and installs premium granite across Columbus, Ohio for homeowners, designers, and builders who want the authenticity of natural stone with the toughness to handle a working kitchen.

Granite Countertop Properties

How Granite Performs

Durability and Hardness

Granite scores 6.5 on the Mohs hardness scale — slightly softer than quartz but harder than marble and almost everything that touches it in a working kitchen. Knives dull before they scratch granite. Heavy impacts can chip an unsupported edge, but granite is otherwise nearly indestructible in normal use.

Heat Tolerance

Granite is one of the most heat-tolerant countertop materials in existence. Pans directly off a burner or out of the oven can be set on granite without damage. This is the single biggest practical advantage granite has over quartz — and the strongest argument for granite in a serious cooking kitchen.

Stain Resistance

Granite is porous and will absorb liquids if unsealed. With proper sealing every 1-3 years using an impregnating sealer, it becomes highly stain-resistant. Lighter granites show staining more visibly than darker varieties — Absolute Black is essentially stain-proof from day one because the dense composition leaves little for liquids to penetrate.

UV Stability and Outdoor Use

Granite is fully UV-stable and freeze-thaw resistant when sealed. It is the most-specified material for outdoor kitchens in the Columbus climate because it handles temperature swings, direct sun, and grill heat without degradation. We fabricate granite for covered and uncovered outdoor kitchens across Central Ohio.

Strengths

Why Granite Still Specs in 2026

  • Extreme heat tolerance. The only premium counter that genuinely handles hot pans directly.
  • Outdoor-rated. The best choice for outdoor kitchens and grilling stations in Ohio.
  • Color and pattern range unmatched. From subtle to dramatic, neutral to exotic.
  • Genuinely durable. Granite installed in the 1990s is still in service today.
  • Resale-recognized. Buyers and appraisers still value granite in the Columbus luxury market.
  • Authentic. Each slab is geological — millions of years old, one of one.
  • Widest price band of any premium counter. Value granites to exotic statement slabs.
Considerations

Before You Choose Granite

  • Sealing is required. Every 1-3 years for most granites. Not difficult, but not zero.
  • Slab variation. Showroom samples are not what your slab will look like — always view the actual slab at the yard.
  • Seam visibility. Busy patterns hide seams well; large uniform fields show them. Discuss placement during design.
  • Edge chips on softer granites. Lighter feldspar-rich granites can chip at corners more easily than denser dark granites.
  • Older granite reputation. The busy gold-and-brown granites of 2000-2010 are dated. Modern specs lean toward statement or neutral.

How They Compare

Granite vs Quartz vs Quartzite vs Marble

Granite is the most versatile of the four — the only one that genuinely handles every use case from interior to exterior to fireplace.

Care and Maintenance

Simple Daily Care, Periodic Resealing

Daily care is mild dish soap and warm water with a soft cloth, or a dedicated stone cleaner like Granite Gold Daily Cleaner or Miracle Sealants Counter Kleen. Reseal every 1-3 years depending on use — the water-bead test is your guide. Wipe up spills promptly, especially on lighter granites.

Granite vs Quartz

Two Premium Materials, Different Strengths

Both granite and engineered quartz are excellent kitchen surfaces. Here is the short version of when each one wins for a Columbus home.

When Granite Wins

Granite

Outdoor kitchens, fireplace surrounds, full-sun kitchens. Heat-tolerant, UV-stable, handles hot pans direct off the stove. Geologically unique — no two slabs alike. Lower cost per square foot than premium quartz on most varieties. The honest workhorse of luxury countertops.

When Quartz Wins

Quartz

Indoor kitchens, baths, busy households. Engineered consistency — the slab matches the sample. Non-porous, no sealing routine, very forgiving with wine, coffee, citrus. Pattern repeats across slabs for designers who want predictable visual flow. Not for outdoor use or direct heat.

Why Impact

Granite Fabrication Is a Craft

Granite has been the original premium stone for a reason. As a boutique Columbus fabricator, we plan every granite install with Slabsmith digital templating before any cuts — laying out seam placement, vein flow, and edge details for review on screen. Our Park Industries CNC handles the precision work: mitered edges on waterfall islands, integrated drainboards, and pattern-matched seams that line up across long perimeter runs.

We source granite from established Columbus-area suppliers and direct Brazilian and Italian partners — Bianco Antico, Steel Grey, Black Galaxy, Blue Pearl, Giallo Ornamental, Absolute Black, plus exotic Brazilian and Italian quarry runs when a designer or homeowner in Upper Arlington, New Albany, Dublin, Bexley, Powell, or Worthington wants a statement piece. Every install ends with a white-glove walkthrough. Discerning homeowners, designers, and builders appreciate the straight talk on which granite fits which room.

Frequently Asked

Granite Countertops FAQ

Is granite still in style in 2026?

Yes, but specifications have shifted. The busy gold-and-brown granites of the early 2000s have fallen out of favor. Modern specs lean toward dramatic statement slabs (blues, exotic movements, book-matched pairs) or clean neutral granites that read as a quiet background. Granite is far from dead — it has matured.

Does granite countertop need to be sealed?

Yes for most granites. Sealing happens at installation and then every 1-3 years depending on use and color. Dark dense granites like Absolute Black are effectively self-sealing and need less attention. Light or porous granites benefit from annual sealing.

Can hot pans be placed directly on granite?

Yes. Granite is one of the few countertop materials that handles direct hot pan contact without damage. This is granite’s biggest practical advantage over quartz.

Will granite scratch?

It is very difficult to scratch granite in normal use. Knives will dull before scratching the stone. Always use a cutting board to preserve your knife edges, not to protect the counter.

How long do granite countertops last?

Granite countertops can last 50 to 100 years or more in residential use. The kitchen will be remodeled long before the granite needs replacement. Granite installed in the 1990s is still in service today.

Can granite be used outdoors in Ohio?

Yes — granite is the most-specified outdoor kitchen counter in Columbus. It handles UV exposure, freeze-thaw cycles, and direct grill heat. Sealing and a covered or partially covered outdoor space extends life further.

What is the difference between granite and quartzite?

Granite is igneous (cooled magma); quartzite is metamorphic (sandstone heated and compressed into solid rock). Granite is speckled and crystalline; quartzite has dramatic veining like marble. Both are natural stone and both need sealing.

Does Impact Countertops install granite outside Columbus?

Yes. We serve the greater Columbus area including Upper Arlington, Dublin, Powell, New Albany, Bexley, and Worthington, plus surrounding Central Ohio luxury home markets.
